FAQ
How can I pay?
single8film.com accepts PayPal. PayPal is the easiest choice and when you pay by PayPal, your accurate shipping information is automatically sent to our computers.
Where is my film processed? How long does it take?
Processing is done in Japan by Fuji Film. Shipment each way takes a week or more and service time in Japan runs 3 weeks. You've chosen a special, rare format to record your images so you should be prepared to wait 6-7 weeks for your film to be returned.
Are there any other alternatives for processing?
Both R25N and RT200N can also be cross-processed as a negative film using ECN2 chemistry. ECN2 includes the necessary rem jet removal step required for Single-8 films. Your film will be grainier compared to regular positive processing and may not have the same archival characteristics as normal processing. Check with your local ECN2 lab for prices.
Do you sell Single-8 cameras?
Not at this time. Your best bet is to check eBay, eBay Germany or Yahoo Auctions in Japan.
What are the color characteristics of the Single-8 stocks?
Each person will perceive color differently.
R25N is a fine grained stock, slightly grainier than Kodachrome 25 and 40, but with more realistic colors.
It's been described as a more modern palette, similar to contemporary negative films. It's slightly saturated, but not anywhere near as saturated as Fuji's Velvia slide film. The palette more closely matches Astia and Provia which have more natural skin tones than Velvia. RT200N is a medium grain tungsten-balanced stock, slightly grainier than Ektachrome Super 8, but at 200ASA. Demos of RT200N are on the RT200N page.
Will your film fit in my camera?
For a full list of Single-8 cameras see the camera list.
Can I still buy Single-8 sound stock?
No. Sound stock was discontinued in 1999. However, you can sound-stripe silent film at the time of processing and add sound using a proper projector or editor.
Can you process Single-8 sound stock?
Yes. If you have old Fujichrome sound stock it can be processed with the sound stripe maintained.
When do you recommend Single-8?
You can usually use Single-8 any time your project calls for Super 8. And Single-8 is your very best 8mm reversal film choice for unobtrusive low-light filming. 200 ASA RT200N used with an extremely compact XL-shuttered P2 or AX100 camera is the perfect combination for guerilla filming at night or for tight indoor situations like at crowded events. It's easy to sneak a P2 into a concert.
When is Single-8 not recommended?
Single-8 is not recommended for low-light sync sound situations. There are no Single-8 cameras that combine 24 fps with an XL shutter.
Does the sound-striped film include the balance stripe?
Yes. Sound striping includes the balance stripe so you can record in stereo.
Will Single-8 film run in a Super 8 Projector?
Yes. Single-8 film is identical to Super 8 film in perforation and aspect ratio and will run in any projector that runs Super 8 film.
What is the difference between Single-8 and Regular 8 film?
Regular 8, also called double 8 or standard 8, is the predecessor to Super 8 and Single-8 films which are also called Type S. There was some confusion about the nomenclature because at least one camera used the term "Single 8" to refer to a regular 8mm roll that was not slit after processing.
Why are Single-8 reels shorter than Super 8 reels?
Fuji's Single-8 stocks are on a polyester base, which is about one-third thinner than acetate stock. That makes for more feet per reel than Super 8. But the length of film is the same.
Can I splice Single-8 film with Super 8 film?
Using tape splices, Single-8 and Super 8 (i.e. Eastman stocks) can be interspliced, but because Fuji Single-8 stock is thinner, you will need to readjust your focus between stock changes.
How do I splice Single-8 film?
Single-8 film can be spliced with tape or an ultrasonic splicer. Cement splices CANNOT be used with Single-8 film. single8film.com sells the proper Fuji splicing tape for Single-8 films.
Can I still develop old film?
Yes! All old Single-8 films (both Fujichrome and Fujicolor) can still be developed. Results will vary with the age of the film and storage conditions, but expect Fujichrome film that wasn't in cold storage to lose greens and reds. Old Fujichrome R25 loses less in color than RT200 and moves towards a pastel palette. If you are filming now with an old cartridge, be aware that grain increases and effective ASA decreases with time.
Old Fujicolor film is a special case and will only be developed as a negative black and white film. See the processing page for more details.
Are the Fuji pre-paid Single-8 mailers still valid?
No. Fuji no longer processes Single-8 film in the U.S. or Europe and any mailers sent to Fuji for processing will be returned. Note: see our latest news page for a possible, but unconfirmed exception.
